In 208 BCE, in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minister Cao Cao (Fengyi Zhang) convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister, himself. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating in Red Cliff (Chi bi). During the battle, two thousand ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed forever.

With so much long non-stop battle action, I lost track of the sides and which generals belonged to which army - there was a North and two or more armies for an allied South force (as well as Admirals for the navy forces). As well, the time line of the action was confusing. Incredible cinematography and CGI effects to recreate the amada of ships and battlefield. Sub-titles were rather small and quickly flashed across the screen and made it hard to read. Overall, enjoyable and spectacular ending. It would be worthwhile to read the story line before watching.

At first glance, this looks like just another one of those 'great spectacle, empty storyline' type movies made for a Chinese audience. That's a pity as the performances and story in this movie - not to mention some of the later battle scenes - are quite fantastic. And while most of the acting is a bit flat - let's be generous and say 'measured' - the scenery and some quite surprising plot twists and turns keep you glued to the screen.
